FAQ

Credit cards are widely accepted in Greece, especially in major cities, popular tourist areas, and larger businesses like hotels, restaurants, and shops. Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly accepted, while American Express may be accepted in some upscale establishments but less frequently in smaller venues. In more remote areas or small shops, cash may still be preferred, so it’s always good to carry some euros.

Tipping in Greece is appreciated, though it’s not as obligatory as in some other countries. In many restaurants, a service charge is already included in the bill, but if it’s not included, leaving a tip of around 5–10% for good service is appreciated.

While knowing Greek isn’t necessary to travel in Greece, it can enhance your experience. In popular tourist areas, many people, especially in hotels, restaurants, and shops, speak English. However, in more rural or less touristy regions, English may not be as widely spoken.

Whether you need a visa for Greece depends on your nationality and the purpose of your visit.

  • Schengen Area: Greece is part of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel between most European countries. If you’re from a non-Schengen country, check the visa requirements for Greece.
  • Visa-Free Countries: Citizens from many countries, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, the U.K., and most European Union countries, can visit Greece without a visa for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Starting in 2025, travelers from visa-exempt countries will need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) before entering Greece.

The best months to visit Greece are late spring (May–June) and early fall (September–October). These months offer the perfect balance of great weather, fewer crowds, and a wide range of activities.
